Wanted: Dead and Alive is a forthcoming Bollywood film starring with Salman Khan and Ayesha Takia in lead roles. The supporting roles played by Mahesh Manjrekar and Vinod Khanna. This is a Thriller movie which is directed by the famous Dancer and choreographer Prabhu Deva Sundaram. It is a remake of the 2006 Telugu film Pokiri. Ayesha too loves Salman, but hesitates to confess her love to him as he is a reckless criminal. Though a goon, Salman has certain rigid principles that leads for an enmity with a Don – the biggest mafia don in the town. The rest of the story is all about how he settles score with him.

Salman Khan is a dedicated bodybuilder. He trains everyday and is famous for taking off his shirt in movies and stage shows alike. Love Aaj Kal movie which is schedule to release in end of July 2009, a Bollywood remake of Taiwanese film Three Times,directed by Hou Hsiao-Hsien. This Love Story film is directed by Imtiaz Ali and produced by Saif Ali Khan and Dinesh Vijan. Previously this movie name is Production No.1 , but the name is changed to Love Aaj Kal. It is a forthcoming Indian film starring Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone in lead roles with Rahul Khanna and Rishi Kapoor in supporting roles. This Story is divided in two generation. Jai and Meera are a modern-day couple in London. They are very happy together but do not believe in tying each other down. Where the Wild Things Are is an upcoming 2009 fantasy film directed by Spike Jonze. It is a live-action adaptation of Maurice Sendak’s 1963 children’s book of the same name. The film combines live action, suitmation, animatronics, and CGI. The film follows the imaginary adventures of a young boy named Max (Max Records), who is angry when his mother, Connie (Catherine Keener), invites her boyfriend over. After causing one mischievous antic after another, his mother tries to send him to his room. He ends up biting her and running away, feeling angry and unloved. He runs outside at night, through a fence until he stumbles upon a boat. He sails away to an island inhabited by seven imaginary monsters called the Wild Things, where they crown him as the ruler.

The Problem

A good movie review is so much more than the number of stars after the movie title. I know that’s what most people want to see, but think about it. A movie producer has just invested $60M and the director has given two years of his life. Do you really think they want to see that reduced to a casual two second glance at the number of stars following the title? I know the internet has turned us all into ADD consumers that have lost the ability to process through written information thoughtfully, but really! Think about the art forms and how they blended together to bring the film to life. Consider this before passing your “two star” judgment. In this article I will attempt to describe four artistic lenses that craft a movie so that when you see your next blockbuster epic or quiet romantic comedy, you will have a greater appreciation for what the film makers have attempted to do.

Genre

This is the start button for every movie. The pitch to the studio money people begins, “It’s a __________ about …” The blank is the genre. Romantic comedy, drama, horror, action/adventure, buddy movie, coming of age movie, etc. Genre is the first lens we look through in unpacking a movie. It defines how the story will unfold, the pace of the editing, the musical theme as well as the incidental music, even the costumes and lighting will be determined by the genre. Each genre has its own set of rules, but genres also are reinvented and redefined successfully by Hollywood’s more creative movie makers. Barry Levinson’s “Rain Man” broke several genre rules but successfully told a very dramatic and engaging story about two brothers setting out on a cross country journey of discovery. Being able to identify the elements of genre in the movie will clarify why the movie is what it is.

Story

The next lens is story. When story is combined with genre the filmmaker’s intent and purpose in making the film becomes clear. Look carefully at each character as they are introduced and trace their arc. When and where do the arcs cross? When do they run parallel? The length of the arc indicates the character’s importance. Is the character introduced to set something up later. When the movie is over, remember the main characters’ introduction and story arc. Was it resolved or left open.

Morality

Every movie has a moral message. It is impossible to tell a story and not have a moral. The message of the film maker will be seen through the moral lens and remembered as we leave the theater. Moral messages include: Good always wins over evil. Nice guys finish last. The bad things you do in secret will be publicly exposed. The morality of the movie can be positive or negative. Horror movies usually end with everyone getting killed except for that final one who either defeats evil or escapes to fight evil another day.

Art

The artistic lens will reveal a movie’s longevity. If care was taken to creatively tell a story by expanding its genre, and revealing well formed characters with developed arcs, the film will become a classic. Every year the movie “Somewhere In Time” is celebrated on Mackinac Island, Michigan at the Grand Hotel. When the movie was first released in 1980, the box office was disappointing. But, when it began showing on cable TV, the artistic beauty of the well told romantic story captivated thousands of viewers. In 1990 the International Network of Somewhere In Time Enthusiasts was formed to plan the Mackinac Island event that became an annual celebration. In 2010 they will celebrate their 20th anniversary when the movie turns 30 years old. Its moral theme of timeless love still causes the movie’s fans to celebrate.

All That To Say…

…While we often are fans of particular movie stars, when you decide to go to a movie, look to see who’s directing the film. The film is their vision and the actors are only playing out the parts.Three movies later, they’ve usually established a moral history that will be repeated in future movies.

Revisit your movie experience through these lenses. Don’t be quick to pass judgment based on your personal opinion. The movie is over and the credits are rolling. Think about everyone who worked on the movie and how they contributed to the genre, story, morality, and art of the film. Do you think the director was able to accomplish what he and the producers set out to do? Read through the films reviews. Do you agree or disagree? As you look through these lenses, your experience at the movies will become far richer.

Leighton Meester
Leighton’s statuesque look and come-hither glamour were first seen in several TV series such as CSI, Seventh Heaven, Law and Order, Simple Rules and House. But before all the fame, her life already seemed like the stories you see in movies. Before she was born, her parents were incarcerated for drug charges. For a time, she lived with her relatives until her mom was given pardon. Despite these, Leighton has maintained a very positive outlook about her parents’ past saying that she has no hatred towards what her parents did. Staying true to the saying, “let bygones be bygones”, Leighton never allowed this stumble to stop her from reaching her dreams.

Aside from being glammed up for her role as the manipulative Blair Waldorf in Gossip Girl, Leighton Meester is also an aspiring singer/songwriter. In fact, she’s already working on her album in between her GG responsibilities. The album is said to be an eclectic mix of RnB, soul and pop according to the star.

Taylor Momsen
At a tender age of 15, model/actress Taylor Momsen has already cast her name as one of the most famous upcoming teen stars thanks to her role as Jenny Humphrey in Gossip Girl. She started out starring in kiddie movies like How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Spy Kids 2, and Underdog. These days, the 5’8” actress has been the muse of many fashion designers for her model-like appearance and doll face. Momsen was signed as a model under IMG.

Recently, Momsen is facing a lot of issues and controversies touching on her rail-thin body, outrageous fashion sense, and her hospitalization scare. There is also a rumor about her dating 23 year-old co-star, Chace Crawford. On the hand, the two young stars haven’t commented regarding their alleged relationship.

Ed Westwick
He rose to fame because of his role as the womanizing Chuck Bass in Gossip Girl. Far from the character he portrays, Ed Westwick said that he’s a one-woman type of man and that he doesn’t see himself as morally bankrupt as the persona he exudes on-screen. The only similarity he probably has with his character would be their undeniable appeal with the girls.

Unknown to some, Ed Westwick is actually British, but his amazing American accent and suave look landed him the part of the most famous womanizer on TV.  He is also a member of an up and coming rock act which first shot to fame in London. When he’s not busy shooting for GG, he’s creating music with his band, Filthy Youth, back in his hometown.

Penn Badgley
Just like girlfriend Blake Lively, Penn also heed the call of acting at a very young. When he moved to Washington, he juggled schooling with his passion for the theater and became part of the Seattle Children’s Theater. Starting out as a child star, Badgley appeared in TV series including Will and Grace, What I Like About You and Daddios. He also did some voice work for video game, Mario Golf 64.

Chace Crawford

Chace Crawford began acting as a hobby while he was attending Pepperdine University in Los Angeles. Shortly after, he landed a role in the hit film, The Covenant before bagging the role of Nate Archibald in Gossip Girl.

Chace Crawford has been pretty popular with the ladies on and off screen with his much publicized relationship with country singer, Carrie Underwood, and rumored fling with co-star Taylor Momsen.
